After nearly 200 episodes of the broadcast series and several theatrical features, the fans still wanted more of Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura ("Those Obnoxious Aliens"): Inaba the Dreamer (1985) marked the debut of the OVAs. Shinobu is pondering what the future may hold, when a boy in a rabbit suit literally lands at her feet. Inaba is a member of the Destiny Production Management Bureau, and when he drops a "subspace key," Shinobu, Lum, and Ataru get a peek at their future lives. By passing through various doors, they see which friends they might end up marrying. None of these futures looks very promising--but none of them may be the real future. An odd mixture of fantasy, sci-fi, and Alice in Wonderland, Inaba the Dreamer offers some funny moments, but the brief running time (57 minutes) keeps the filmmakers from really exploring the comic possibilities. The disc is subtitled, but not dubbed.
