Tempers flair and misunderstandings multiply as Eureka Seven nears its midpoint. Renton and Eureka sink into despair, convinced that everyone dislikes them--even the mecha Nervash. Eureka flees into an abandoned mine and is somehow absorbed into its rock wall. Renton rescues her and his fierce desire to protect her helps the Amita Drive of the Nervash create an air wave that enables the Gekkostate to escape the attacking military. Holland blames Renton for everything, dismissing him as "dangerous," even after Renton saves his life during a mission. Renton realizes that the mecha battles he's been fighting kill human beings, and his revulsion recalls Shinji's horror in Neon Genesis Evangelion. Disillusioned and discouraged, Renton jumps ship and is picked up by Charles Beams, a dashing mercenary who's out to destroy Holland and the Gekkostate.(
