As Eureka Seven continues into its second season, the story grows more complicated and the threats more dire. Renton finds himself torn by conflicting loyalties as Ray and Charles attack the Gekkostate, hoping to capture Eureka. Holland and Talho, who share a past with the invaders, organize a hi-tech defense that carries the day, but at a terrible price. The traumatized Renton learns that Eureka's origins are stranger and her significance greater than anything he had imagined. Holland built the Gekkostate to protect her. Yet Renton was the one she chose, and under their influence, the mecha Nervash is evolving rapidly. When Holland takes the Gekkostate to the secret Tresor Laboratory for repairs, Renton discovers his father, grandfather, and sister all have ties there. The filmmakers keep the story moving briskly, but the later episodes of Eureka Seven feel very different in tone than the more light-hearted first installments
